Instinet Newport and InstinetAdvance JavaHelp Systems
Context: In creating InstinetAdvance, Instinet used a subset of source code from an existing platform, Newport. This single set of source code was to be shared by both products on an ongoing basis, with some new functionality to be developed specifically for InstinetAdvance. The systems were built in Java.
In keeping with the development environment for these products, my assignment was to multipurpose the existing Newport JavaHelp system to be deployed with InstinetAdvance and maintained from a single set of source files. To offset the similarities in appearances of the systems, unique identities were to be applied to the online help and other support materials.
Note: Sun's JavaHelp 1.1.3 relied on Sun's Swing environment for HTML rendering - HTML rendering capabilities that are comparable to HTML 3.1 (today's browsers use HTML 4.0), hence stylistic options were limited.
